Progress to date
There are four houses, a kindergarten and playground at Tumaini Village in Arusha. Three of the houses are home to a Mama and eight children. The fourth house is home to the village manager, until the manager’s residence is completed later this year.
Children are referred to Tumaini Village by local police and child welfare agencies. Two kindergarten classes of 24 students are taught, with local children from outside Tumaini charged minimal fees to attend.
A soccer field, swings and climbing frames are enjoyed by the village children and neighbouring local children.
It is heartening that local agencies have come on board to offer support to Tumaini Village. Many of the children have experienced considerable trauma in their lives. A local hospital has offered to assess and treat the children’s mental health.
